Cell phones can wait when you are driving
Cell phones may be one of the most useful inventions of the modern era. Cell phones offer many services to millions of people. Despite all of the services a cell phone offers, they are dangerous when in the hands of a driver.
Drivers using a cell phone while driving is an extremely dangerous distraction. Studies have shown that using a phone while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk. Drivers can take preventative steps to avoid using their phones while behind the wheel to help stay safe.
Establish GPS before getting on the road
If you know that you will need to use the GPS function on your phone while driving, set it up before you get on the streets. Trying to look up and type in an address while driving can steal a driver’s focus from the road and what is around them.
Do not participate in conversations
Texts and phone calls are rarely worth the risk of an accident. If your phone is receiving too many calls or texts while you are driving, consider putting your phone out of sight, like a glovebox. If you must answer your phone, pull over and stop at a safe location to use your phone.
Go hands-free
One of the biggest threats a phone poses is the attention it needs to use the device. Most smartphones have a hands-free option to use the phone through voice commands. This hands-free function can allow a driver to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
The phone does not take priority
When people are outside of a car, it is acceptable to reach for their cell phone each time it makes a noise. In a car, that behavior can take lives. Let your cell phone wait when you are driving.
