Risk factors and causes are not the same thing
An individual in Kentucky may have risk factors that increase the likelihood that he or she could get sick. However, these factors do not actually cause the condition itself. For instance, a man has a higher risk of getting mesothelioma, but it doesn’t mean that is the reason why he will become sick. Research has shown that there is a link between exposure to asbestos and the occurrence of mesothelioma.
The odds of getting this condition are 1.7 times higher for those who have spent at least a year exposed to asbestos at work. This was according to a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Those who worked in such an environment for 20 or more years were 5.4 times more likely to obtain it. It is important to note that scientists still can’t be sure if other factors come into play, but asbestos exposure seems to be the primary cause.
Individuals who are exposed to asbestos on the job could become ill or possibly die from such exposure. Those who thought to be more susceptible to getting mesothelioma may want to keep a close on on any signs that could indicate the disease is present.
A person who has been exposed to asbestos and gets mesothelioma may be entitled to compensation to help pay medical bills and other expenses related to the illness. If the exposure is a result of gross negligence, other damages may be awarded in a lawsuit or in a settlement. An attorney may help a sick worker show that exposure to asbestos resulted in getting sick and that an employer failed to take steps to mitigate this danger.
