AI Brings Hope for Mesothelioma Diagnosis and Monitoring

May 12, 2021/in Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a notoriously difficult disease to diagnose. Its victims often don’t realize anything is wrong until the disease is at advanced stages, when it becomes difficult and painful to breathe. Even then, measuring the progression of the disease presents its own challenges.

But new developments in artificial intelligence can potentially change the way doctors diagnose this disease. If AI can spot red flags earlier before the cancer reaches advanced stages, treatment options can be more effective.

Why Mesothelioma is Difficult to Diagnose and Measure

The greatest challenge for doctors is the difficulty in measuring the growth of mesothelioma tumors within and around the lungs. This is a challenge both for diagnosing the disease in the first place and for monitoring its progression.

The tumor grows so slowly and in such a complex pattern that it is extremely time-consuming and difficult to measure accurately. As a result, it can be difficult to identify in its early stages. Even after a mesothelioma tumor is identified, it is very easy for a doctor to make mistakes in measurements, even for doctors who are trained specialists.

A 2025 study published in the National Library of Medicine reported that malignant pleural mesothelioma typically grows along the pleural lining rather than forming a distinct round tumor, which makes standard tumor measurement criteria more difficult to apply.

How AI Tools Are Being Studied for Mesothelioma

AI research involving mesothelioma has expanded in recent years.

A new study on Technology in Cancer Research & Treatment identified 173 articles related to AI and mesothelioma. After removing duplicates and applying specific criteria, the researchers ultimately analyzed 19 studies and found that most of the research focused on tumor diagnosis, which is obviously crucial for early detection.

Here’s the full breakdown of what’s being studied:

  • Tumor diagnosis – 73%
  • Prevention and prognosis – 21%
  • Tumor volumetric measurement – 5%

With more scientists and researchers recognizing the problem at hand and looking for solutions using artificial intelligence, it brings more hope for early diagnosis.

New 2026 Research on AI and Mesothelioma Tumor Measurement

More recent research suggests that AI can help doctors measure mesothelioma more accurately. In 2026, researchers reported on an AI-assisted system called ARTIMES, which was developed to measure pleural mesothelioma tumor volume on CT scans.

According to the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), researchers evaluated 10,926 CT scans from 2,080 patients with pleural mesothelioma. The model was later validated using 4,674 scans from 943 patients in clinical trials.

The results of the study were significant.

ARTIMES detected disease progression a median of 5 weeks earlier than standardized guidelines for measurement (RECIST).

They also reported that ARTIMES had a stronger prognostic performance than the RECIST criteria, with a concordance index of 0.83 compared to 0.73.

How Doctors Could Use AI in Mesothelioma Care

AI may help doctors and researchers with things like:

  • Reviewing CT scans
  • Measuring tumor growth
  • Evaluating whether a treatment option appears to be working

This matters because mesothelioma can be difficult to measure consistently, especially when tumors grow along the lining of the lungs as opposed to a single clearly defined mass.

Better measurement can also help researchers test new treatments more reliably. If doctors are able to identify disease progression sooner and more consistently, they can make more informed decisions on whether patients should continue existing treatments or consider alternative options.
