Bedsores And Nursing Home Neglect

Nursing home neglect can cause tremendous suffering for those who depend on staff members for their care. One of the most painful consequences of such neglect is bedsores, painful ulcers caused by prolonged pressure on the hips, shoulders and other joints.

At Satterley & Kelley PLLC, we have decades of experience handling nursing home neglect cases for elders in Louisville and throughout Kentucky. If your loved one has suffered, we are here to help you help them.

What Causes Bedsores?

We take for granted that we can move freely in bed, turning and shifting to free ourselves from uncomfortable positions. For immobile nursing home residents, this is not possible. They rely upon staff members to turn them in bed or on reclining chairs. When staff members fail in their duties, bony areas on the body are subjected to prolonged pressure. This pressure can eventually result in painful decubitus ulcers, more commonly known as bedsores.

Bedsores are extremely painful. If left untreated they can lead to dangerous and even fatal infections. Nursing home residents are often unable to express themselves and so may suffer in silence. This is why it is so important to monitor your loved one’s condition and follow up when bed sores and other signs of neglect appear.

In handling nursing home negligence claims, we scrutinize bed charts, facility protocols and other evidence to determine if a nursing home resident’s injuries could have been prevented. When negligence is to blame, we work tenaciously to hold all responsible parties accountable.
